CM Punk finally captured the AEW World Championship from Hangman Adam Page at the recent Double or Nothing PPV, although an injury forced him to announce a prolonged absence from in-ring action on the following episode of Rampage, thus slamming the breaks on a potential Summer of Punk.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter previously reported that Punk’s injury was likely a broken foot, and he has now provided an update on the status of this injury, with a successful surgery preventing the injury from worsening.

“The surgery went well. When they did the surgery, they found the injuries to the bones were worse than they expected, but with the surgery, they were able to fix everything up. There is no timetable for his return past the belief it will be before the end of the year.”

In his absence, AEW are set to crown an interim AEW World Champion at the upcoming Forbidden Door PPV, with Jon Moxley facing off against either Hiroshi Tanahashi or Hirooki Goto, depending on who emerges victorious when the pair face off at NIPW’s Dominion show.

Upon the return of CM Punk, there will be a showdown between himself and whoever emerges as the interim AEW World Champion in order to decide who is the undisputed champion of the promotion.
