Drew McIntyre’s current role is reportedly playing a part in deciding his next step.

As is well documented, Drew McIntyre’s current WWE contract is nearly its expiration date. It was April of last year when we first found out that the Scotsman had less than a year left, and it’s believed that his deal comes up around the time of WrestleMania 40. Still, McIntyre remains a top star on Raw, recently turning heel and circling the World Heavyweight Championship.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it’s believed that the new direction for McIntyre is key in his decision over his future, with it believed that the 38-year-old would’ve taken time off after his contract expiry if his new character hadn’t worked out as well as it has.

“I was checking with people. And it’s like, look, you know, the belief is that he knows what the situation is. And, you know, he’s already promoting feuds for the summer and the fall. I don’t think he’s planning on going anywhere. And the thing with him with the contract, I mean, the thing that he was looking for months ago, when, you know, it was the contract was running out, and he wasn’t in a rush to sign, was number one; he thought that he wanted to do this new character. And if the new character didn’t work out in the booking and the booking wasn’t strong and everything like that, the idea was maybe, maybe go back and spend time with the family and take time off. And that was among the thoughts obviously, with the character got over great. And the other aspect of the character getting over great is that by doing so and not signing the feeling is that his price should be higher, because he’s a much bigger star. And he’s got big programs to come back to then was the situation six months ago. So we’ll see how that all works out. But I would feel that his not signing and gambling. I would kind of say couldn’t it turned out better, but certainly it turned out good,”

As it stands, McIntyre’s spot remains as high-profile as ever, as his new character has led him to challenging Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 in just over a week’s time. He is one of the highlights of Raw every week and continues to be promoted for future WWE events past April.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Drew McIntyre’s WWE status as soon as we hear more.
