Grayson Waller Says WWE Always Told Him To Be More Serious, Felt He Couldn’t With New Day
Grayson Waller says he didn’t get the chance to be more serious during his time with The New Day.
In July 2025, Grayson Waller began associating with The New Day. It came shortly after the Australian had ended his partnership with Austin Theory, with Waller wasting little time in finding new teammates. However, after around nine months, the trio split when news emerged of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods’ respective WWE departures, and the current NXT star has now reflected on his time with the team.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Grayson Waller revealed WWE always told him to be more serious, saying he didn’t feel he had the chance to do that with The New Day.
“My advice was always, ‘We want you to be serious. We need you to be serious.’ I’m like, ‘Yes, let me be serious.’ ‘You’re with the New Day.’ Great. I love the New Day. I can’t explain how much those guys did for me. I got all the respect in the world for them, so I never want people to think I’m derogatory towards them at all. What a chance to work with one of the best tag teams of all time. But we’re out there wearing silly hats. We’re mucking around and joking. I can’t be serious. I can’t show them what they want to see. I never got a chance to show them who I am. No one is in the wrong. I didn’t do the wrong thing. They didn’t do the wrong thing. They didn’t see what they want. I didn’t give them what they want. That’s just how the business works. Sometimes, the ships sail a different way.”

After an absence from our screens following New Day’s exit from the company, Grayson Waller made his impactful at the end of July when he crashed NXT and cut a scathing promo on their roster. The 36-year-old was then given an opportunity at the NXT Championship at Heatwave, something which he capitalised on to win the title in a four-way match this past weekend.
Now with gold around his waist, Waller has his first taste of singles success in his WWE career. Having previously been one-half of the WWE Tag Team Champions, he now looks to forge his own path on NXT.
As for Kofi and Austin Creed, the duo debuted for AEW at Sunday’s All In: London. In the days that followed, they revealed more about their stunning WWE departures, including that they pay cuts they were offered were more than the initially reported 50%. You can read more about that here.
