Kyle Fletcher Discusses Dealing With Negative Social Media Commentary
Kyle Fletcher knows how to deal with negative social media posts aimed at him.
While it can easily be argued that the wrestling community is more connected than ever thanks to social media, it can come with a cost in the modern age. Online, many users can feel shielded by their usernames and anonymity, giving them the confidence to unfortunately go after public figures, including professional wrestlers. Now, one of AEW’s top stars has addressed how he deals with online trolls.
During San Diego Comic Con, Kyle Fletcher talked with The Knockturnal about how he deals with negative social media.
“The main thing is knowing who you are as a person and not letting the opinions of strangers on the internet affect how you view yourself. I think I’m definitely partial to seeing a negative comment or if something comes out and then there’s a bunch of negative comments. It’s hard, for sure. It’s a hard thing to read. It’s a hard thing to go through. But I think it comes back to, I know who I am. I know what’s important to me. I know what my values are, and as long as I stay true to that, then nobody, especially people I don’t know. If it’s somebody whose opinion I value and respect and love as a person, I will absolutely listen to their negative criticism. But the internet is literally strangers trying to tell me who I am and how I live and what’s right and wrong, and I don’t think they know. They don’t know me, they don’t know who I am. So once you can make that distinction, it becomes a lot easier. At this point, it’s water off ducks back to me kind of.”

While negative comments are unfortunately par for the course on social media, they’ve only been exacerbated since the inception of All Elite Wrestling as tribalism between companies has become prominent in some online spaces. Regardless of which promotion fans prefer, it stands to reason that more opportunities for talent should be a positive thing when it comes to the growth of the industry overall.
Based on his comments, though, it’s fair to think that Fletcher is only focused on one thing this weekend, and that’s fighting Bandido for the AEW International Championship at the Redemption PPV tomorrow in Montreal. The match got a bit of a “prelude” at SDCC, which you can watch here.
