Kyle Fletcher Reveals How Claudio Castagnoli Inspired His “It’s Who We Are” Tattoo
AEW’s Kyle Fletcher has revealed the backstory to his “it’s who we are” tattoo.
At present, Kyle Fletcher is one of AEW’s most consistent performers. He’s had a prominent rise in the singles division, and many even feel he could be one of the next world champions for the company, particularly after he lost the International Championship last Sunday at All In: London. However, “The Protostar” has now opened up on how a chat with Claudio Castagnoli helped him when he was struggling earlier in his career.
In a chat with the Daily Star, he noted that it was at one of his lowest points that he got one of the greatest pieces of advice from a fellow AEW star.
“There is one [piece of advice] that does stick out a little bit. I got it tattooed on my wrist. It says, ‘It’s who we are,’ and that was a bit of advice I got from Claudio Castagnoli. It was early on in my career at AEW, and I had put up something online that was something along the lines of, ‘Will it ever be enough? Will it ever feel like it’s enough?’ I think at the time I was going through a little bit of success. Obviously I’d gotten to AEW. To me that was huge, but I still didn’t feel, I guess, fulfilled is the right word. I posted that just because that’s how I was feeling. Will it ever feel like it’s enough?Claudio pulled me at a show backstage and he said, ‘I saw that thing you posted.’ We just had this conversation, and he basically said, ‘No, it will never feel like it’s enough. That’s kind of the whole point of it. You’re always gonna want more.’ So I asked him, ‘If that’s the case, if you’re not striving for something, like how do you keep going? Like what is the thing that pushes you to keep working so hard?’ He stood there for a second and he thought about it, and he said the words, ‘It’s who we are.’ And those stuck with me a lot because this is who I am. I work so hard because this is who I am. If I didn’t work so hard, if I didn’t love this, if I didn’t have that passion, I wouldn’t feel like the same person. I wouldn’t be who I am.”

Having the drive to keep moving forward has been very important for Fletcher’s career both before and during AEW. He noted in another interview that, during the pandemic, he had to stop wrestling and take a warehouse job to get by. Then, when not long after inking a deal with All Elite Wrestling, injuries prevented Aussie Open from showing off their full potential, so he had to go it alone as a singles star.
This change led to his drastic physical transformation, which led to him becoming a rising up the card in the company, leading to his main-event AEW World Championship match All Out 2025. Not to mention, having big feuds with Will Ospreay, Konosuke Takeshita, and more. While his immediate future following All In: London remains unknown, Fletcher’s future remains bright regardless of his next move.
