In late May earlier this year, Randy Orton suffered a back injury said by Fightful Select to be “significant”, with the expectation being that the RKBro member would be out of action for the remainder of the year, a notion that has proven true thus far as the former Raw Tag Team Champion has been out of action since dropping the titles to The Usos alongside his tag-team partner Matt Riddle.

Fightful Select have now provided an update on Randy Orton’s injury status, noting that ‘The Viper”s fusion back surgery is expected to keep him out of the ring for an extended period, with some within the company believing that it’d be “fortunate” if he returned altogether due to the nature of the injury.

“Fightful has learned that Randy Orton required a fusion in his lower back that would keep him out of action for an extended period of time. The surgery has already happened, though we don’t know when. His wife had posted a picture of him around the operation, however. There were some in WWE that told us they’d be fortunate to have him back after such a long career and the significance of the injury.”

Additionally, the report states that those within the company revealed to Fightful that initially following the injury, Orton insisted he’d eventually return. Despite this, there are currently no creative plans in order for Orton, as well as there being no official timetable for his return.

Orton is currently believed to be contracted through 2024 with WWE, although it is uncertain as to whether time will be added on or the contracted itself will be frozen due to his injury.

As always, we wish Orton all the best in his recovery, and hope to see him back in the ring when the time is right.
