Fightful Select reported last night that WWE had discussed the idea of Stone Cold Steve Austin returning to the ring once again to take on the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 in April. Austin last competed at WrestleMania 38, where he defeated Kevin Owens in his first match in over 19 years.
Speaking on the most recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that the proposed match for Austin was in fact not Roman Reigns, but former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar.
“The match that was pitched was not Roman Reigns. It was Brock Lesnar. It’s not on, something can happen now. It’s been talked about probably for months.”
-Dave Meltzer
It’s worth noting that Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful has since followed up on Meltzer’s report, claiming that both matches have been pitched to Austin by WWE.
Lesnar made his WWE return last night at Raw is XXX, attacking Bobby Lashley during his main event US Championship match with Austin Theory. Meltzer noted that both Lesnar and Lashley are expected to be in this Saturday’s Royal Rumble match and will feud, however its unclear as of writing whether this is expected to lead to a bout between the pair at WrestleMania 39.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any updates on the possibility of Stone Cold Steve Austin competing at this year’s WrestleMania, as well as the liklihood of his opponent being Brock Lesnar as soon as we hear more.
