Tony Khan Confirm Mercedes Moné Injury Changed Plans For Title Match At AEW All Out

Tony Khan confirmed he had to make a pivot for All Out due to Mercedes Moné being injured.

At AEW All In: London, Mercedes Moné fought Willow Nightingale for the Women’s World title and won. However, her nose was damaged during the bout, and she’s been only seen in talk segments and commentary ever since. Then, it was announced that she hadn’t been cleared, leaving Willow Nightingale and Thekla to battle it out for the number one contendership at All Out in Chicago instead of Moné having her first title defense. Now, it seems this was a creative pivot.

At the All Out Media Call, Tony Khan confirmed that Mercedes Moné was originally set to compete at this weekend’s show, while also stating he expects Moné to be cleared by next month.

“Mercedes Moné was originally scheduled to wrestle on AEW All Out, and that’s the nature of wrestling. It’s a hard-hitting sport. There are injuries, and just like in all sports, you have to have a deep roster and be able to think on your feet and be flexible. And that’s what’s great about AEW. There’s so many great wrestlers in this company, and in this case, multiple former World Champions looking to step up and fight each other to get in line to fight the champ. In Mercedes’ case, it’s not a long-term injury. It’s something where she’ll be back. I think she’ll be back next month, and I’m almost certain she’ll be back next month. That’s the plan is for Mercedes to return in October. That’s why we have this match on the pay-per-view to determine who will challenge for the World Title at our next pay-per-view, WrestleDream. So Mercedes’ injury did affect plans. She was originally set to wrestle at AEW All Out, and I think she very much wants to wrestle on Saturday, but the doctors have not cleared her.”

While it’s a miss that Monè isn’t able to defend her gold, Thekla vs. Willow Nightingale pits the two previous world champions against each other as they look to decide who’s truly next in line for when Mercedes is ready to return. Plus, while the winner will receive their shot at WrestleDream, it’s worth remembering that AEW will make their debut in Paris for Grand Slam: France in early October, with it possible the Women’s World Champion could appear there.

Also, in recent weeks, Moné has also been on commentary to see Queen Aminata pick up wins on Collision, possibly teasing a future showdown between them down the line.
