According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, it’s believed the company wants Sami Zayn vs. Roman Reigns to close Crown Jewel, prompting the Undisputed WWE Championship to change hands from CM Punk to Sami Zayn on the September 11 episode of SmackDown.
“The belief among several spoken to within WWE is that WWE is seeking to headline November’s Crown Jewel with Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn, thus the title switch from CM Punk to Zayn this past Friday on Smackdown.”

Crown Jewel takes place on November 7 at Riyadh Season Stadium at KAFD in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and this reported plan lines up with what is becoming a yearly tradition for the company. Since 2024, WWE has built the event around a champion versus champion singles match between the reigning World Heavyweight Champion and the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion, with neither of the titles at stake. The two men simply face one another with the winner becoming Crown Jewel Champion for that year, with Cody Rhodes beating Gunther in Riyadh in 2024 to become the first men’s Crown Jewel Champion, and Seth Rollins defeating Cody Rhodes in Perth, Australia in October 2025.
As noted in the report, putting Sami Zayn in the match also means WWE avoids running CM Punk against Roman Reigns again. The two main evented night two of WrestleMania 42 in April of this year, where Roman Reigns beat CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship, with the rematch being something they can hold onto for down the line.
Interestingly, a report surfaced not long after Zayn’s title win which revealed that some in WWE disagreed with the idea of Sami becoming champion. You can read more about that here.
