Some In WWE Reportedly Disagreed With Sami Zayn’s WWE Championship Win On SmackDown

Sami Zayn’s win reportedly wasn’t unanimously supported within WWE.

On this past Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Sami Zayn surprised fans by defeating CM Punk to reclaim the WWE Championship. Zayn managed to hit Punk with the title prior to the match-winning Helluva Kick as a result of Kevin Owens’ interference-gone-wrong, in a match which also saw Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae get involved. “The Last Real Good Guy” previously claimed the title at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia, though his short reign frustrated many fans. It seems that this most recent win, however, has frustrated some within WWE.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed Zayn’s title win received opposition from some in WWE.

“With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. And when it’s all said and done, this will all make sense. There were certainly people who were against it, but they did it and that was that.”

Since his 2013 debut, Sami Zayn has won a number of titles across NXT and the main roster, including the NXT Championship and the Intercontinental Championship. Zayn also won the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 39 with the man who inadvertently gifted him the win on Friday, Kevin Owens.

As mentioned, his previous WWE Championship reign met a premature end, only lasted nine days, leaving many fans hoping he gets a longer go of it this time around. However, given the amount of contenders currently chasing the gold, including Kevin Owens, Johnny Gargano, Finn Bálor, and GUNTHER, Zayn will have his work cut out for him when it comes to proving he belongs at the top on SmackDown.
