Last week’s edition of Smackdown saw Roman Reigns successfully defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Riddle, before Brock Lesnar made his shocking return, delivering an F5 to the champion.

Following the conclusion of Smackdown, WWE announced that Lesnar and Reigns would face off once again at this year’s Summerslam in a Last Man Standing match.

This however wasn’t WWE’s original plan for the biggest party of the summer, as multiple reports over the past few months have indicated that Reigns’ planned opponent for Summerslam was Randy Orton, although The Viper is currently out of action with a back injury.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has now provided an update on the status of Orton, with an expected return date still a while away.

“Lesnar replaces Orton in the SummerSlam main event. Orton is now having back surgery, meaning he’ll be out of action for several months.”

As always, we wish Orton the best in his recovery, and look forward to his eventual return when the time is right.
