Since the backstage altercation following AEW All Out on September 4, many people have been wondering what the contract status is of CM Punk. The Elite, who were involved in the brawl and subsequently suspended, have recently made their return to the company while nothing has been announced regarding Punk’s future.
There have been numerous reports attempting to clear up the situation including claims that AEW were looking into a buy-out of Punk’s contract but, as Dave Meltzer is now reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Punk is currently still under contract with no release as of yet due to a hold up in the talks.
“Punk as of the weekend was still under contract to AEW and being paid and those close to him say the hold up on his being released is all on the AEW side as he’s ready and willing to move to his next project.”

It’s unclear what the hold up in the situation is but MMA fans recently saw Punk on commentary at the Cage Fury Fighting Championship event, which was his first on-screen appearance since the AEW suspension where he didn’t shy away from joking about the situation.
