The current WWE Intercontinental Champion thinks he has outgrown the title.
As of writing, Gunther has held the Intercontinental Championship for over 520 days, officially becoming the longest reigning champion in history earlier this year. While his time with the midcard title has been exceptional, most fans will agree that The Ring General is ready to be thrust into the spotlight when it comes to WWE’s top accolades, and this seems to be something that the man himself also believes.
While speaking to Steve Fall of WrestlingNewsCo, Gunther was asked about whether he would be able to main event the first night of WrestleMania 40 as the IC Champion. Simply put, the Austrian said that that wasn’t going to happen, while stating that Seth Rollins is currently on ‘a very good run’ and that the two ‘Mania main events being the two world titles are set ‘as it should be’. However, he admitted that he has perhaps outgrown his current championship and is looking to take the next step soon.
“But I think there’s a ranking system and everything for a reason. I think it’s quite obvious that I outgrew the Intercontinental Championship already, I am ready to make that next step.”
-Gunther
As viewers will remember, Gunther was the last man that Cody Rhodes eliminated before going on to win this year’s Royal Rumble, but, as it stands, the 36-year-old is still yet to challenge for either Raw or SmackDown’s major championships. Despite this, you’d have to imagine that it won’t be long before he finds himself mixing it up with the likes of Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns at the top of the card.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Gunther and what’s next for him as we hear more.
