During the July 29th strategy meeting held by Stardom, it was announced that Stardom and New Japan Pro Wrestling would be creating the first ever IWGP Women’s Championship, with an inaugural champion to be crownded this November.
The news was broken down by Stardom’s official English twitter account (@we_are_stardom), with confirmation that the IWGP Women’s Championship will primarily be defended across NJPW, although they also noted that the title could be defended at some of Stardom’s bigger events.
Earlier this year, Stardom confirmed that some talent would be heading to the States to compete across NJPW Strong. Stardom’s strategy meeting noted that as well as Japan, the IWGP Women’s Championship is also likely to be defended across the Unites States.
Initially, Stardom highlighted that the IWGP Women’s Championship would not be replacing or becoming the promotion’s top championship, with those spots being occupied by the World of Stardom Championship and Wonder of Stardom Championship, currently held by Syuri and Saya Kamitani respectively.
On November 20th of this year, the first ever NJPW x Stardom show will take place at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, with a number of mixed tag-team matches expected to be announced, alongside the coronation of the first ever IWGP Women’s Champion.
Plans are currently unknown as to who will be competing for NJPW’s first ever top female prize, and thus we’ll aim to provide any updates as soon as we know more.
