The New Day Reportedly “AEW-Bound” Since WWE Departure

The New Day have reportedly always been AEW-bound.

Back in May, WWE announced that Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah and Austin Creed, formerly Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, of The New Day had been granted their releases from the company shortly after its post-WrestleMania cuts. Their 90-day non-compete clauses expired at the beginning of August, while their release announcement video was titled “Daybreak” prompting widespread speculation that the duo could be heading to AEW imminently.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discussed the possibility of Kofi and Creed making their AEW debuts, including speculation over which match could potentially serve as their first appearance.

“There are a lot of rumors regarding the former New Day being Strickland’s partners. Xavier Woods is going as Austin Creed already, while the former Kofi Kingston this week took out trademarks for both Kofi, Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah (his real name) and KSM. It has been widely expected from when they decided to leave WWE after turning down a 50 percent pay cut to stay, that they would be winding up in AEW. The Young Bucks have wanted to do a program with them for years.”

Some believe Kingston and Creed could be involved in a potential triple-threat AEW World Trios Championship match at All In: Wembley alongside Swerve Strickland. Others believe they could debut after The Young Bucks defeat Adam Copeland and Christian Cage for the AEW World Tag Team Championship, potentially setting up the “dream match” between The New Day and The Young Bucks that fans have wanted for well over a decade.

The apparent expectation that AEW could be their next destination has fuelled further speculation about what the future will hold for Kingston and Creed. However, there has been no confirmation that either has signed with AEW, meaning any potential debut remains speculation until the duo officially appears for the promotion.
