Edge’s final WWE run did not work out as he would have liked.

Adam Copeland, then known as Edge, returned to WWE at the 2020 Royal Rumble following a near career-ending injury. His final WWE match came against Sheamus on the August 18, 2022, episode of SmackDown before he joined AEW in 2023, where he has since found success big in a singles and tag team capacity.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Copeland discussed his final WWE run in greater detail, claiming that he was overproduced during his time with his former promotion.

My experience by the end with WWE was overproduced, overrehearsed, over-everything. They kept handcuffs on you where you couldn’t really explore much. That’s not the case with AEW, and that it’s fun”

-Adam Copeland

Following his return to WWE competition in 2020, Copeland feuded with his former Rated-RKO partner Randy Orton before going on to work a program with Roman Reigns in 2021. He also formed The Judgment Day during the latter stages of his final WWE run, though the group would go on to reshape its image after his departure.

Despite how his WWE run ended, Copeland enjoyed a decorated career with the company, winning multiple world championships and having memorable matches against the likes of John Cena, Batista, and Mick Foley, amongst others.

Copeland is currently one half of the AEW World Tag Team Champions alongside Christian. 2026 marks the first time the “Rated-R Superstar” has held tag team gold with Christian since the end of the Attitude Era in 2001. Copeland will now defend the titles alongside Christian against The Young Bucks at AEW All In: London on August 30.

Elsewhere during the interview, Copeland revealed that he intends to retire with All Elite Wrestling. You can read more about that here.

Adam Copeland also had plenty of praise for AEW President Tony Khan during the interview, highlighting his qualities both as a boss and as a person. You can read more about that here.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on future plans for Adam Copeland as soon as we hear more.
