A new report has emerged claiming “significant discussions” were held between Mercedes Moné and AEW ahead of Forbidden Door 2.

Prior to sustaining an ankle injury at NJPW’s Resurgence show on May 21st, a show where she was originally planned to become the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion, many fans had questioned whether Mercedes Moné would be involved in the upcoming AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2 event, although the aforementioned injury is likely to have eliminated that possibility.

Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated recently sat down with AEW President Tony Khan ahead of the company’s joint PPV with New Japan Pro Wrestling, during which Barrasso revealed that, according to those close to Khan, “significant discussions” had been held regarding Mercedes Moné’s involvement before she sustained an injury.

“Multiple sources close to Khan have confirmed that there were significant discussions with Moné, which bodes well for a potential appearance in the future.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Khan highlighted the numerous injury issues that plagued the first event last year, noting that he’s fully confident that AEW and NJPW will be able to deliver the best wrestling event of the year this time around.

“Last year’s Forbidden Door was a challenging time with a number of injuries and travel obstacles, and we were able to come together to put together the best event of the year in wrestling. This year’s Forbidden Door will be the best event either company has ever participated in,”

The second instalment of Forbidden Door will take place on June 25th at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with just two matches being announced thus far.

Kenny Omega is set to defend his IWGP US Heavyweight Championship at the show against Will Ospreay in a rematch of their Wrestle Kingdom 17 encounter earlier this year, whilst Bryan Danielson and Kazuchika Okada will go one-on-one in a dream match for the ages.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the prospect of Mercedes Moné potentially appearing in All Elite Wrestling as soon as we hear more, and we wish her all the best in her recovery.
