Callum Newman Was Reportedly Planned To Face Jon Moxley At Forbidden Door

Callum Newman vs. Jon Moxley was originally planned for AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
This past Sunday, June 28, All Elite Wrestling, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, CMLL, and STARDOM came together to present Forbidden Door at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. Jon Moxley was among the AEW stars in action, although injury forced a change to his original plans for the event.
Speaking on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez revealed that former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Callum Newman had originally been scheduled to face Jon Moxley at Forbidden Door before suffering a shoulder injury at NJPW Dominion.
“Callum Newman was gonna be on the show, but injured. I don’t know the match.”
-Dave Meltzer
“I believe it was the Moxley match.”
-Bryan Alvarez
“Okay, well that confirms what I was pretty much told too by other people, but not him.”
-Dave Meltzer
Jon Moxley instead successfully defended the AEW Continental Championship against Bandido at Forbidden Door before later sharing a brief interaction with IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Shota Umino. He then found himself at ringside for the show’s main event between Will Ospreay and Swerve Strickland alongside the Death Riders.
Will Ospreay’s association with the Death Riders throughout his run to winning this year’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament has been a point of contention between Ospreay and United Empire leader Callum Newman.
With Newman losing the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Yota Tsuji at NJPW Dominion in Osaka-jō Hall on June 14, a show Ospreay missed due to his wedding, it is likely that The Prince may take issue with United Empire’s former leader continuing to align himself with the Death Riders.
Despite Forbidden Door now being behind us, it appears that Newman still has business to attend to, as he took to X earlier today to question whether the door was still open.
Elsewhere at Forbidden Door, Jay White made his long awaited AEW return, with Tony Khan revealing after the show that he was only cleared to return to the ring earlier that week. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on future plans for Callum Newman to face Jon Moxley as soon as we hear more.
