A long-rumoured dream match is reportedly in discussions to take place at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

On June 25th at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, AEW and NJPW will come together once again to present the second instalment of their Forbidden Door PPV. NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion KENTA recently took to Twitter to claim that he’d be interested in working the show if the money was right, and it now appears as though that will be the case, as Fightful Select are now reporting that the working plan was for KENTA be involved in the show.

The report then elaborates further, adding that the internally discussed opponent for KENTA at the time of writing is CM Punk, who’s set to return to the ring just over a week prior on the debut episode of AEW Collision.

“We haven’t heard that KENTA’s deal to appear at the show is finalized, but both companies are operating on the assumption that he is. However, the internally discussed opponent brings a different gravity to the situation. We’ve learned that CM Punk has been discussed as KENTA’s opponent, which could help bring closure to an over-decade back and forth between the two.”

As pointed out by Fightful, the pair have been at odds with each other at various points over the past decade and beyond, with Punk notably admitting that he several of his signature moves from the former NOAH star.

KENTA is a name that will forever be tied to the “Forbidden Door” concept, with the Bullet Club member being the first New Japan Pro Wrestling star to appear on AEW Dynamite back in early 2021.

Elsewhere on the show, Kenny Omega will defend the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship against Will Ospreay in a rematch of their Wrestle Kingdom 17 bout, whilst former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion will take on Bryan Danielson in another dream match for the ages.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the prospect of KENTA working with CM Punk at Forbidden Door as soon as we hear more.
