On the 20th of November, NJPW and World Wonder Ring Stardom came together to present their first ever joint pay-per view, Historic X-Over, featuring bouts such as KAIRI vs Mayu Iwatani to crown the inaugural IWGP Women’s Champion, as well as Will Ospreay defending his IWGP US Championship against Shota Umino. Following said IWGP US Title match, AEW star and former IWGP US Champion in his own right Kenny Omega appeared on the titantron, challenging Ospreay to title match at WrestleKingdom 17 on January 4th in the Tokyo Dome.

The pair had been hinting that they’d eventually face of for an enternity before the official announcement, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has now provided an insight into how the dream match finally came into existence.

“But from the start, the idea was for it to be at WrestleKingdom. Omega basically put it together with the blessing of Tony Khan.”

Kenny Omega currently finds himself 2-1 down in the ongoing best of seven series between he and The Young Bucks (The Elite) and Death Triangle over the AEW Trios Championships that the EVPs were forced to relinquish in September due to their involvement in the ‘Brawl Out’ situation.

Omega hasn’t competed in an NJPW ring since his departure in 2019, as he has primarily focused on his AEW career. The bout is undoubtably going to be one for the history books, and we can’t wait to see what the two extraordinary athletes produce on the night.
