Zayda Steel Reflects On Emotional Mercedes Moné Match

Zayda Steel had to hold back tears as she prepared to face AEW star Mercedes Moné.
The emotional significance of certain matches can often be overlooked in professional wrestling, particularly when a wrestler finally shares the ring with someone they have admired or viewed as a major influence. AEW has produced several notable first-time encounters in recent years, with Zayda Steel recently experiencing one of her own.
Steel recently faced Mercedes Moné for the first time, an experience that clearly carried considerable significance for the young wrestler. Speaking with MuscleManMalcolm, Steel opened up about the emotions surrounding the match and did not hold back when discussing what the opportunity meant to her.
“Guys, my music hit, and instantly, I tried to hold back tears on my entrance. I’ve never blanked out that quick in a match. That was like my comfort wrestler. You know when you deal with a lot in life, and you have your comfort people? Mercedes was always that for me, and to get that early on year one. I haven’t even been in AEW for a year, and I got my dream match already. So I already know after year one, I’m only gonna get better and better. So Mercedes, we’re gonna run it back. And whatever I said earlier, bring that clip up later when I beat her.”

Zayda Steel has taken a somewhat unconventional path during her time in All Elite Wrestling, particularly given the circumstances surrounding her arrival. She entered the promotion with relatively little name recognition, having become one of the first prominent wrestlers to depart WWE’s ID programme, which has attracted considerable discussion since its inception.
With each match, Zayda Steel has continued to improve, and that progress has not gone unnoticed by fans, with some already viewing “The Real Deal” as a potential future cornerstone of AEW’s women’s division, much like Julia Hart and Skye Blue.
If Steel and Mercedes Moné meet again, the rematch could provide another opportunity for Steel to showcase her development, with the experience of their first encounter now under her belt.
